Tirunelveli (DC): An all-party meeting headed by DMK veteran, Suba Seetharaman at Palayamkottai on Wednesday decided to organise a massive demonstration and rally on March 22 in support of the students who are on a sit-in protest at the Palayamkottai Government Siddha college in Tirunelveli for over a month now demanding that they should be allowed to attend classes for the academic year 2011-2012.
Although a 100 students have gained admission to the college through government counselling, they are not being permitted to attend the first year classes for no fault of theirs.
The students who met the state health minister were told that the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) had stopped the college from admitting students for the current academic year because of its lack of infrastructure.
He , however, assured them that they would be accommodated in the first year of the same course the next academic year when the college had the CCIM”s permission to make admissions.
The students were, however, not persuaded and continued their sit-in protest, which is now 31 days old.
The all party meeting held by the DMK, Congress, MDMK, DMDK, CPI and CPI(M) called on students’ unions of all arts and professional colleges in Tirunelveli district and traders in the city to join their protest and massive demonstration, which they plan to hold with the Siddha college students to put pressure on the government to come to their rescue.
