Jaya hikes pension for weavers, doctors

NT Bureau, Chennai: In a press statement issued here, the Chief Minister said that economic growth depended on workers’ dedication to society. The base for any work is contributed by them and their basic needs have to be met. So, those weavers who have completed  60 years of age would be recipients of this pension scheme.

She said that there were 11,062 workers (aged above 60) registered under Tamilnadu Manual Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Autorickshaw/Taxi Drivers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Laundry Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Hairdressers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Tailor Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Handicraft Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Palm Tree Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Handloom and Handloom Silk Weaving Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Footwear and Leathers Goods Manufactory and Tannery Workers Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Artists Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Goldsmiths Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Potters Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Labour Welfare Board, Tamilnadu Powerloom Weaving Workers Welfare Board and Street Vending and Shops and Establishments Workers Welfare Board.

She said that workers under Tamilnadu Co-operative Handloom Weavers Board, too, would receive a raise in their monthly pension from the present Rs 400 to Rs 1,000 and it would benefit as many as 19,404 weavers.

She said that it was in her previous regime that the Tamilnadu Co-operative Handloom Weavers Family Pension Scheme was introduced and it had been effective from 1 January 1992. Under the scheme, if a worker faces death/disability before attaining the age of 60, their kin would receive a monthly pension of Rs 550 for a period of 10 years. Or if the person faces death after attaining the age of 60, the kin would receive a similar amount, whichever benefits them better would be provided by the government.

Similarly, medical practitioners can register under a related medical institute to be covered by the scheme. As many as 9,563 doctors from Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy would benefit by the new order.
